What is LLU?
LLU is about getting more bandwidth to customers.
Ofcom (The office of communications), the UK regulator, believes LLU offers the greatest opportunity for competitive operators in the UK to differentiate their products and services.
LLU is a process where the incumbent operator [BT] makes its local network [the copper wires that run from the customer’s premises to the local telephone exchange] available to an LLU operator.
What is available?
Shared Metallic Path [SMP] - permits the LLU operator to share the access of the line with BT - the LLU operator provides broadband, whilst BT retail or another operator provides conventional narrowband PSTN voice services such as Carrier Pre Selection (CPS).
Full Metallic Path [FMP] - the lines are disconnected from the incumbent supplier (unbundled) and connected to the new LLU operator. Using DSL technology, the capability of the individual line is then upgraded - offering permanent high speed direct connection. This allows the LLU operator full exclusive physical access, covering the entire frequency range of narrowband and broadband, enabling the LLU operator to provide both voice and data services.
